Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday, with Canada hoping to secure at least partial relief from American steel tariffs.

According to three Canadian sources who spoke to CBC News and Radio-Canada, the delegation’s expectations are modest — but even limited progress on steel could serve as a template for easing other tariffs currently imposed on Canadian goods.

The sources, who are not authorized to speak publicly, said Trump personally invited Carney to the meeting. The invitation began as an informal exchange during their encounter in New York City last month on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, and was later formalized through diplomatic channels.

Officials see Tuesday’s meeting as a chance to reset relations between Carney and Trump following a contentious summer, marked by missed trade deadlines, new tariffs on Canadian products, and tensions over Ottawa’s proposed Digital Services Tax.
