Today in the Red FM studio, Alberta’s Minister of Indigenous Relations and MLA for Calgary-North West, Rajan Sawhney, joined News Director Rishi Nagar for an in-depth discussion on pipelines, oil and gas, and infrastructure development across the province.

In her interview, Minister Sawhney emphasized the importance of respecting Indigenous treaty and constitutional rights while advancing major energy projects. She noted that following Premier Danielle Smith’s recent pipeline announcement, she has been in active discussions with both provincial and federal ministers to move the project forward. Sawhney added that negotiations with the federal government are ongoing to ensure progress on Alberta’s energy priorities.

When asked about Alberta’s efforts to reform or overturn federal legislation viewed as harmful to the resource sector, Minister Sawhney said that federal-provincial talks have been productive so far. She highlighted that Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed interest in positioning Canada as an energy superpower, aligning with Alberta’s goals.

Sawhney pointed to the negative impacts of past federal laws such as Bill C-69 and the Impact Assessment Act, which she said have discouraged investment in the energy sector. She added that the introduction of Bill C-5, which provides certain exemptions for projects listed under it, is a step toward mitigating those challenges.

The minister concluded by stressing that federal policies have caused “significant damage” to Alberta’s resource industry, but she remains optimistic that ongoing collaboration will help rebuild investor confidence and support responsible energy growth in the province.
