As Alberta’s teachers’ strike continues, a citizen-led campaign is calling for a public vote on whether taxpayer dollars should continue supporting private education.

Elections Alberta approved the proposed referendum question on Tuesday, allowing organizers to begin gathering signatures. The official question reads:

“Should the government of Alberta end its current practice of allocating public funds to accredited independent (private) schools?”

Under Alberta’s Citizen Initiative Act, organizers have 120 days to collect enough support — at least 10 per cent of voters from the last provincial election, or roughly 177,000 signatures.

If Elections Alberta verifies that the threshold has been met, the petition will be sent to the Speaker of the Legislature. From there, Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) will decide whether to develop new policy or send the question back to Elections Alberta for a provincewide referendum.

The initiative comes as education funding and support for Alberta’s public school system remain at the forefront of political debate.
