Alberta Justice Minister Mickey Amery says the province is taking an aggressive stand against organized crime, announcing the ban of the Bishnoi gang alongside the hiring of new police officers and prosecutors.
In an interview on RED FM’s morning show, Amery told host Rishi Nagar that Alberta is working closely with the federal government and neighboring provinces to tackle cross-border crime.
The minister’s comments come at a time when Alberta is facing rising concerns over organized crime and gang activity. The province recently moved to formally ban the Bishnoi gang, a group linked to violent crime and drug trafficking in Canada and abroad.
He also underscored the urgency of addressing extortion threats that have been impacting members of Alberta’s South Asian community.
“One of the announcements that we made was the banning of that gang and making sure that we stand behind the victims of what is happening in our communities,” he added.
“We know that we need to create specialized and targeted units to help deal with these complex criminals. No matter where they are in our province, whether in Calgary, Edmonton, or rural Alberta, they will not be able to breathe; we’re going to come after them,” he added.
The minister confirmed that 50 new police officers have been added in Calgary and another 50 in Edmonton, supported by Alberta Sheriffs across the province. In addition, dozens of prosecutors have been hired to strengthen the justice system.
