The gap in police-reported violent crime rates between Canada and the United States has narrowed in recent years, largely due to a rise in major assaults in Canada, according to a new report from Statistics Canada.
The report, which examines crime data from 1998 to 2023, confirms that the U.S. still reports a higher rate of violent crime per 100,000 people than Canada.
However, while the U.S. has seen a 37% decline in violent crime over the 25-year period, Canada has experienced increases—up 13% between 1998 and 2008, and another 9% from 2009 to 2023.
Although homicide remains more frequent in the U.S.—primarily due to higher firearm-related homicide rates—the trend in major assaults differs. The rate of police-reported major assaults has been rising in Canada while decreasing in the U.S.
On the other hand, both countries have seen long-term declines in several non-violent crimes, including robbery, break and enter, motor vehicle theft, and theft.
