Alberta is set to revamp its provincial license plates for the first time in decades and is inviting the public to help choose the new look.
Premier Danielle Smith and Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction, announced the initiative on Wednesday in Edmonton. The redesign process will feature a public, tournament-style online vote running from October 15 to November 5.
Albertans will choose from eight proposed designs, all inspired by iconic elements of the province’s natural beauty and key industries—ranging from the Three Sisters Mountains to symbols representing agriculture and energy.
The updated license plate, expected to roll out in late 2026, will carry the theme “Strong and Free,” a nod to both Alberta’s Latin motto and a line from Canada’s national anthem. The phrase is also part of the United Conservative Party’s branding, but officials say it reflects Alberta’s broader identity.
“When the King of England delivered the throne speech in Ottawa recently, he mentioned ‘strong and free,’” said Nally. “That phrase doesn’t belong to any one political ideology.”
How the Voting Process Works:
- Round 1: Eight designs go head-to-head.
- Round 2: The top four advance.
- Final Round: Two finalists compete for the winning spot.
The final design will be announced during the fall legislative session.
Albertans will have the option to upgrade to the new plate for $28, or receive it for free during their regular vehicle registration renewal. The current plate, in use since 1984, will still be valid if it’s in good condition.
The redesigned plates will also feature reflective technology to improve visibility for law enforcement and automated systems. They will meet international standards for readability and protection against counterfeiting.
