Just over a year after stepping away from municipal politics, former city councillor Andrew Knack will return to public service — this time as Edmonton’s next mayor.
Running as an independent, Knack defeated longtime council colleague Tim Cartmell and a field of other contenders in a closely watched municipal election. The former three-term councillor for Ward Nakota Isga built a campaign focused on community engagement, optimism, and non-partisan leadership.
“This victory belongs to all of us,” Knack said in his victory speech, flanked by his parents. “To every single worker — whether you build, teach, drive, fix, care, serve, or create. This campaign was fueled by passion, grit and tenacity. Every day, Edmontonian spoke loud and clear, choosing optimism and hope over big money and party politics.”
Knack will succeed outgoing mayor Amarjit Sohi, who chose not to seek re-election after one term.
Knack says his first action as mayor-elect will be to meet with newly elected councillors to establish shared priorities and ensure cohesive governance.
Throughout the campaign, Knack positioned himself as a progressive, solutions-focused candidate in a race where many voters remained undecided until the final days. His platform addressed public safety, affordable housing, infrastructure, and inclusive city-building.
“Over the last 12 years on city council and throughout this campaign, I have listened to tens of thousands of Edmontonians — and I will continue to listen,” Knack said. “We will take action to make your neighbourhoods safer, main streets more vibrant, and services more accessible. These things are not frivolous — they’re what you deserve.”
Knack will officially take office in the coming days.
