The City of Calgary responded to over 160 complaints related to fireworks between Oct. 20 and 22, including two fires that raised safety concerns during the ongoing festival period.
The Calgary Police Service (CPS) received at least 167 calls about fireworks disturbances in neighborhoods such as Redstone, Cornerstone, Skyview Ranch, Cityscape, Saddle Ridge, Taradale, and Martindale.
Emergency Management and Community Safety officers inspected 75 businesses, issuing three charges to those selling fireworks without permits.
Peace officers handed out one ticket for illegal fireworks discharge and issued 32 verbal warnings. About 60 pounds of fireworks were voluntarily surrendered after people fled upon seeing officers.
The Calgary Fire Department attended two fires linked to fireworks. In Oct. 20, crews responded to a vehicle fire in the 1100 block of Cornerstone Way N.E., where investigators believe fireworks ignited the wheel well of a pickup truck, causing over $30,000 in damage.
A second fire occurred late in Oct. 21 at a four-story residential building on 80 Avenue N.E., when fireworks landed on a balcony planter. Fire crews contained the blaze to the balcony and found no injuries.
City officials reiterated that only trained professionals with permits may legally discharge fireworks in Calgary.
Violations of fireworks bylaws can lead to fines starting at $250 for use or sale without a permit and $500 for possession without a permit.
Residents are urged to report illegal fireworks by calling 311 and to celebrate safely.
