Elections Calgary has announced a recount in the Ward 12 race after an exceptionally close result left just 29 votes separating winner Mike Jamieson from runner-up Sarah Ferguson.

Under Alberta’s Local Authorities Election Act, a recount is automatically triggered when the margin is narrow enough that rejected or disputed ballots could impact the final outcome.

In a statement, Elections Calgary said the decision was made “based on the number of sufficient rejected ballots,” noting that the returning officer can review valid, objected, or rejected ballots — excluding blanks — to determine whether the election results could have been affected.

While the recount will move forward in Ward 12, officials have denied a request for a recount in another city ward, saying it did not meet the legislative criteria.
