Canada’s parliamentary budget officer says federal spending to help provinces and territories recover from natural disasters could rise by over $1 billion in the next decade.

The Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangement (DFAA) provides federal funds to support recovery from floods, wildfires, and major storms.

According to the PBO’s new report, annual costs under the program are expected to grow from $881 million last year to more than $1.8 billion by 2034.

The report notes that while the number of floods has stayed roughly the same, wildfires and major storms have become more frequent. It also says each disaster now costs much more than 15 years ago due to stronger storms and population growth in high-risk areas.

On average, disaster aid spending is projected to total about $1.2 billion a year for floods, $325 million for wildfires, and $258 million for storms.
