A resident of Calgary has received approval to begin collecting signatures in an effort to potentially remove Alberta’s education minister from office.
The province’s chief electoral officer has approved a recall petition application targeting Demetrios Nicolaides, the MLA for Calgary-Bow.
Jennifer Yeremiy, who submitted the application, argues that Nicolaides has failed to adequately manage the public education system amid issues such as overcrowded classrooms and understaffed schools.
She claims his performance makes him “unfit” to serve as education minister and represent the constituency.
Nicolaides responded by saying the recall process is being misused, noting it should be reserved for cases of unethical conduct or breaches of public trust, rather than disagreements over government policies.
If the petition proceeds, Yeremiy will have three months to gather approximately 16,000 signatures, representing 60 percent of the total votes cast in Calgary-Bow during the 2023 election.
This marks the first recall petition for a member of Alberta’s legislature since the process was introduced in 2021 by former United Conservative Premier Jason Kenney.
