A recount is taking place today in Calgary’s municipal election following a request from runner-up Sonya Sharp.

Sharp lost to Jeromy Farkas by just 581 votes — a margin small enough to fall within the 0.5 per cent threshold that automatically allows for a recount under city election rules.

Election Calgary’s returning officer approved the process to verify the results from last week’s vote.

Farkas’ team says he has already begun onboarding at City Hall ahead of Wednesday’s swearing-in ceremony.

Sharp says the recount isn’t about contesting the outcome, but about ensuring transparency and maintaining confidence in Calgary’s democratic process — and possibly identifying areas where the system can be improved.
