U.S. President Donald Trump says he has no plans to meet with Prime Minister Mark Carney “for a while” after halting trade discussions with Canada in response to an Ontario government advertisement he called “egregious.”
Trump announced on Saturday that he would impose an additional 10 per cent tariff on Canadian goods, on top of existing levies, after learning that an ad featuring former U.S. president Ronald Reagan speaking against the use of tariffs was still airing.
When asked Monday aboard Air Force One about the timing of the new tariffs, Trump replied, “I don’t know when it’s going to kick in. We’ll see.”
Both leaders are in Kuala Lumpur for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit. When asked if he would meet with Carney there, Trump said, “I don’t want to meet with him. No, I’m not going to be meeting with them for a while.
No, I’m very happy with the deal we have right now with Canada. We’re going to let it ride.”
The Ontario government’s advertisement, broadcast on American television networks over the past week, features everyday Americans and excerpts from Reagan’s 1987 radio address warning of the risks of using tariffs.
