The federal government’s 2025 budget is focused on balancing fiscal stability with immediate relief for Canadians struggling with affordability, says Randeep Sarai, Secretary of State for International Development.

In an interview with RedFM, Sarai said the government’s main vision is to strengthen the economy while ensuring support for Canadians facing rising living costs.

“The goal is to help people now while building long-term stability for Canada’s economy,” he said.

One of the key features of this year’s budget is the separation of the operating and capital budgets. A move Sarai says allows the government to keep short-term spending in check while continuing long-term infrastructure investments.

The government is also reviewing potential private-sector involvement in airport operations, but Sarai clarified that no final decisions have been made.

“Private participation could improve efficiency and enhance traveler experience, while ensuring worker protections remain in place,” he said.

Sarai defended increased spending on defense and security, noting that global tensions and geopolitical uncertainty have made it a priority. On immigration, he said lower targets do not mean fewer opportunities but rather a focus on attracting talent that aligns with Canada’s labor needs.

The budget also includes measures to increase housing supply and reduce everyday costs through grocery and utility relief programs.

“The 2025 budget is designed to keep Canada’s economy strong while helping people manage today’s challenges,” Sarai said.
