Liberals face second budget confidence vote as MP resignations stir uncertainty

The minority Liberal government is bracing for a second confidence vote on its federal budget today, just one day after surviving an initial challenge in the House of Commons.

Thursday’s vote — in which the Bloc Québécois and NDP joined the government to defeat a Conservative motion rejecting the budget — was overshadowed by Alberta Conservative MP Matt Jeneroux’s announcement that he intends to resign from Parliament. His move follows days of speculation that he might cross the floor to the Liberals, although he has not yet formally stepped down.

Adding to the political turbulence, Nova Scotia MP Chris d’Entremont quit the Conservative caucus earlier this week to sit with the Liberals, a shift that left the government just two votes short of a majority. That narrow margin means the Liberals must rely on opposition support to withstand a series of confidence votes tied to the budget.

Today’s vote will be on a similar motion put forward by the Bloc. An NDP spokesperson says the party’s seven MPs have not yet decided how they will vote, leaving the outcome uncertain as the government navigates another critical test of its stability.
