Nearly three months after a labor strike grounded air Canada flights for three days in august, thousands of passengers are still waiting for promised refunds and reimbursements.
Traveler lynda elstad said she remains frustrated by the delays, noting the airline had committed to covering the costs of alternative flights, food and lodging.
“But they seem to be waiting and waiting,” elstad said while boarding another air Canada flight this month.
Consumer advocate gábor lukács, president of air passenger rights, said the ongoing delays are not just inconvenient but likely unlawful.
“The law is clear. an airline must respond to complaints within 30 days, and that response should include payment,” lukács said. “you can’t take another four to six weeks after replying to actually remit the money.”
Lukács also criticized the federal government for failing to put enough pressure on air Canada, calling for a public inquiry into the delays.
In a statement, the airline said some claims are more complex and require more time to process. air Canada said it is handling about 1,400 refund requests a day and expects to complete most by the end of November.
According to its website, about 88 per cent of claims have been resolved, with just over 8,000 cases still pending.
Lukács said passengers who have already received confirmation of the amount they’re owed should consider taking air Canada to small claims court if payment has not yet been made.
