The City of Calgary will proceed with a scheduled Palestinian flag-raising ceremony this Saturday, but Mayor Jeromy Farkas says it may be the last time a national flag is flown at city hall.
Farkas announced that he will bring forward a notice of motion to amend the city’s flag policy so national flags will no longer be raised at municipal buildings. The decision follows heated public debate over the request from the Palestinian Community Association to fly the flag amid rising tensions across Canada.
“It’s clear that our current policy is no longer workable,” Farkas wrote in a statement on X. “Going forward, we will not be raising national flags at city hall. The city cannot be seen to take sides in international conflicts.”
The flag-raising request, approved earlier in the week under the city’s long-standing protocol, will still go ahead. Farkas confirmed the event will proceed under standard requirements, including that it be conducted “respectfully, safely, and with an unequivocal rejection of hatred in any form.”
If council approves Farkas’s motion, Saturday’s ceremony on November 15, 2025, could mark the final time any national flag is raised outside Calgary’s municipal building.
