The House of Commons will hold a decisive vote Monday on the federal budget’s main motion — a confidence measure that will determine whether the Liberal government’s fiscal plan moves ahead and whether the party can continue governing.

The Liberals tabled the budget earlier this month, outlining billions in new spending aimed at supporting an economy strained by U.S. tariffs, alongside planned public service cuts the government says will save billions more.

While the motion itself simply asks MPs to “approve in general the budgetary policy of the government,” its status as a confidence vote means the stakes are high: if it fails, the government would fall and Canadians would likely be headed to another election.

The Liberals recently gained a seat after former Conservative MP Chris d’Entremont crossed the floor to join the governing party. Even so, they remain a few votes short of a majority and will need support from at least one other party to pass the motion.
