Canada and India have agreed to restart negotiations toward a comprehensive trade deal, revisiting discussions that first began 15 years ago. According to readouts from both Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office and that of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the two leaders committed to pursuing an “ambitious” Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

Modi has also invited Carney to visit India, an invitation the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed he has accepted, with the trip planned for early 2026.

“The ability to have more effective trade with them, to scale that trade with them, would be greatly helped by that (an agreement),” Carney said Sunday while attending the G20 summit.

The bilateral pact would aim to double trade between the nations to $70 billion by 2030. Carney’s office noted that the CEPA would encompass broad areas including goods, services, investment, agriculture and agri-food, digital commerce, labour mobility, and sustainable development.
