Monday brought chaos to Calgary roads as a long-awaited winter blast finally arrived, dumping heavy snow across the city.

Calgary police reported close to 500 collisions over the course of the day. About three dozen of those incidents resulted in injuries, and more than 75 were categorized as hit-and-runs. Fortunately, none of the hit-and-run events led to reported injuries.

The snow is expected to linger for the next few days due to continuing cold temperatures.

Tuesday’s forecast calls for a high of –3 C, though the morning wind chill will make it feel more like –8 C. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) projects that temperatures will hover near –7 C in the afternoon before dropping to –15 C overnight.

Similarly, Wednesday is set to bring another frigid start, with wind chill conditions feeling like –14 C before temperatures climb to –6 C later in the day.

On Thursday, there’s a 30 per cent chance of more flurries, though the potential snowfall amount remains uncertain.

A modest warming trend is expected heading into the weekend, with highs of –8 C on Friday, –6 C on Saturday, and a comparatively mild 5 C on Sunday.

Looking ahead to Monday—the first day of December—Calgary could see a notable thaw with a forecast high of 5 C and a mix of sun and cloud.
