Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump are set to have a brief meeting Friday at the Kennedy Center, the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed.

Carney will also meet separately with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, according to confirmation from the Mexican embassy in Canada. Sheinbaum is also expected to hold a private meeting with the U.S. president.

All three leaders are in Washington for Friday’s FIFA World Cup draw, which will outline how the tournament will be split among Canada, the United States and Mexico.

Earlier this week, Carney said he anticipated seeing the U.S. president at the event, though he did not specify that a formal meeting was planned, only noting he expected to “see the president around there.”

The visit comes amid an ongoing tariff dispute between Canada and the United States. Negotiations to resolve the trade conflict were abruptly paused in October after Trump objected to an Ontario government advertisement that aired during the World Series. The ad featured former U.S. president Ronald Reagan and criticized tariffs.

Carney has since apologized and reiterated Canada’s readiness to return to negotiations whenever the White House is willing. However, U.S. ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra has recently expressed skepticism that any agreement will be reached before the end of the year.
