Canadians already feeling pressure at the checkout counter are in for more bad news: food costs are expected to rise again in 2026.

That’s the key finding from the newly released 2026 Food Price Report, produced by Dalhousie University in partnership with several other Canadian universities.

CityNews spoke with the report’s lead author, Dalhousie food researcher Dr. Sylvain Charlebois, ahead of its release. He said Canadians should brace for a four to six per cent increase in food prices next year.

“For an average family of four in Canada, we are expecting their food bill to go up by as much as $1,000 for 2026 — $994 to be exact,” Charlebois told CityNews.

According to the report, a family of four will spend $17,571.79 on food in 2026.

The latest projection continues a years-long climb in grocery costs. Over the past five years, Canadian food prices have surged by 27 per cent, the report notes.
