A preschool in a rural community north of Calgary is dealing with a respiratory illness outbreak, according to Alberta Health Services (AHS). The declaration was made Monday after a number of children became ill.
A letter from AHS’ public health communicable disease control outbreak team, shared on the Crossfield Playschool Association’s Facebook page, states the outbreak was triggered by “a cluster of children sick with respiratory symptoms.”
The symptoms listed include cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, changes in taste or smell, runny or congested nose, fever, fatigue, muscle or joint pain, headache, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
In its post, the Crossfield Playschool Association asked parents to keep children home for at least 24 hours or until symptoms improve and they are fever-free without medication.
During the outbreak, educators must report daily to AHS about the symptoms observed among children in their care. AHS also advises frequent handwashing with soap and water or the use of an alcohol-based sanitizer to help prevent further spread.
