The House of Commons could adjourn for its winter break as early as Thursday, potentially rising without the Liberals securing passage of their extensive budget implementation bill.

Although the parliamentary calendar lists Friday as the final sitting day, MPs may agree to begin their Christmas break ahead of schedule. They are set to return on January 26.

Government House Leader Steven MacKinnon said Wednesday the Liberals have “accomplished an incredible amount” during the fall sitting, despite several major budget and crime bills still awaiting final approval.

This session marks the first full sitting since Prime Minister Mark Carney took office in the spring. Since then, MPs have passed legislation aimed at streamlining major project approvals and reducing interprovincial trade barriers.

When asked Wednesday how Parliament has been functioning, Carney acknowledged his minority position but said the House is “functioning well,” highlighting the major projects bill passed in June.

Carney added that Canadians “rightly” expect more progress and emphasized his desire to advance the remaining crime legislation as quickly as possible.
