Flight dispatchers at Porter Airlines have unanimously voted in favour of strike action after more than 14 months of contract talks failed to produce their first collective agreement, the Canadian Airline Dispatchers Association (CALDA) announced Wednesday.
According to CALDA, all 35 certified dispatchers at Porter supported the strike mandate. The group joined the union in August 2024, seeking a contract that acknowledges their critical role in managing flight operations across Porter’s domestic, transborder, and international routes.
The union accused Porter of showing “a lack of respect” toward dispatchers and expressed alarm that the airline has begun training non-union employees to potentially take over their duties if a labour dispute occurs.
CALDA president Rob King condemned the move as “unsafe, irresponsible, and disrespectful,” emphasizing that dispatchers are certified aviation professionals whose expertise is central to flight safety.
Porter Airlines, in a statement, said it values its dispatchers and has put forward “fair and meaningful proposals” during negotiations. The airline noted that conciliation is still in progress and maintained that there is “no risk of an immediate labour disruption.”
“We remain optimistic that an agreement will be reached and, in the meantime, will continue to ensure safe operations at all times,” the company said.
