Calgary mother honours late daughter with community blood drive

Menaal Mullan

A Calgary mother is calling on the community to donate blood in memory of her daughter, who died nearly two years ago after living with a rare genetic blood disorder.

Menaal Mullan, remembered for her vibrant personality and infectious laugh, had thalassemia — a condition that affects the body’s ability to produce hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen in red blood cells.

Before her death in January 2024, Menaal underwent 270 blood transfusions. She was 18.

Shermin Mullan, who kept her daughter’s medical journey largely private, has since launched the Menaal4Life Foundation and is organizing a community blood drive on Dec. 30, the day Menaal would have turned 20.
