Former Conservative MP Michael Ma says he had not decided to cross the floor to the Liberal Party until the day it was announced, despite being photographed with Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre at the party’s Christmas event the night before.

Speaking in a sit-down interview with CP24 Breakfast on Thursday, Ma said he was still fully committed to the Conservatives when he attended the event.

“The night I attended the Conservative Christmas party, I was truly a Conservative member, and really an MP,” Ma said. “I had not made a decision at that point.”

Ma’s sudden move raised eyebrows on Parliament Hill, particularly given his sharp criticism of the Liberals only weeks earlier. In a House of Commons debate on the budget, he had referred to the Liberals as “team feudalism” and accused them of not believing “in a productive economy that works for hard-working Canadians.”

However, Ma said his perspective shifted after discussions with Prime Minister Mark Carney, describing the prime minister’s approach as pragmatic and centrist.

“I realized Prime Minister Carney’s pragmatic and also centrist approach really aligns with mine,” he said, adding that the decision was only finalized after meeting Carney on the day the crossing was announced.

Ma acknowledged that his riding had elected him as a Conservative just months ago, but said he believes his constituents will ultimately be better served with him sitting as a Liberal.

His defection brings the Liberals within one seat of a majority in the House of Commons.
