Alberta’s election agency announced Monday it has approved a proposed referendum question that would ask voters whether the province should separate from Canada.
The question requires a yes-or-no response and reads: “Do you agree that the province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state?”
Elections Alberta said the proposal was submitted by the Alberta Prosperity Project and its chief executive officer, Mitch Sylvestre. The group must appoint a financial officer for its petition campaign by early January, a required step before it can begin collecting signatures.
Once that requirement is met, Sylvestre — who is also a constituency association president for Premier Danielle Smith’s United Conservative Party — will have four months to gather just under 178,000 valid signatures in support of the referendum. If the threshold is reached within the allotted time, the question could advance to the next stage of Alberta’s citizen-initiated referendum process.
