Niharika Sreekumar says she is living a nightmare after her husband died in the emergency room of an Edmonton hospital following a wait of more than eight hours to see a doctor.

“My tears have dried up. I cry when I am alone,” she said.

Through her grief, Niharika is demanding answers and accountability for the death of her husband, Prashant Sreekumar, vowing to uncover how it could have happened.

She says a Hindi phrase will guide her fight for justice: “Saam Daam Dand Bhed,” meaning “whatever it will take.”

“Whatever it takes to get justice for Prashant, I am going to fight,” she said.

On Dec. 22, Prashant, 44, began experiencing severe chest pain while at work. A client drove him to the Grey Nuns Hospital in southeast Edmonton, where he was checked in and directed to sit in the waiting room.

Hospital staff performed an electrocardiogram (ECG) to assess his heart, but the family says Prashant was told the test showed nothing concerning and that he would need to continue waiting to see a doctor.

Hours later, Prashant died in the emergency department — a loss his wife says should never have happened and one she is determined to seek justice for.
