Canadians in several parts of the country may be welcoming the new year under wintry conditions, as forecasts call for snow, freezing rain and powerful winds.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a series of yellow and orange weather warnings stretching from eastern Ontario to the Maritimes.
In Ontario, conditions are expected to vary widely. Ottawa could see freezing rain, while parts of northern Ontario brace for heavy snowfall. Communities such as Timmins and areas along Lake Superior may receive between 40 and 60 centimetres of snow, while Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury are forecast to see lighter — but still significant — totals of 20 to 40 centimetres.
Snow squall warnings are also in effect for parts of southern Ontario. Cities including London, Barrie and Owen Sound could see snowfall ranging from 25 to 50 centimetres, depending on location.
Meanwhile, other communities such as Toronto and Windsor are expected to face strong winds, with gusts that could reach up to 90 kilometres per hour, raising concerns about hazardous travel conditions.
