A boil water advisory was issued early Wednesday morning for several northwest Calgary communities following a major water-main break.
Alberta Health Services declared the advisory for parts of Parkdale, Montgomery, and Point McKay. Residents and businesses in the affected areas are being instructed to bring all tap water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before use.
The precaution applies to water used for drinking, brushing teeth, washing raw foods, preparing baby formula or juices, and making ice. However, water used for bathing or laundering does not need to be boiled.
City officials say the advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
In response to the incident, the City of Calgary has activated its Municipal Emergency Plan and implemented Stage 4 water restrictions. These restrictions prohibit outdoor water use for activities such as ice rinks, snow-making, and other large-scale outdoor water consumption.
The city is also directing indoor facilities, including pools, arenas, and recreation centres, to put water reduction plans into effect as crews continue to address the issue.
