Canada’s voluntary grocery code of conduct for grocers, suppliers, wholesalers, and primary producers is set to be fully implemented on Thursday.
The code is designed to encourage fair and transparent business practices across the grocery sector, particularly around the use of fees, penalties, and other commercial terms between retailers and their suppliers. It aims to bring greater predictability, accountability, and balance to an industry that plays a critical role in the national economy.
Overseen by the Office of the Grocery Sector Code of Conduct, the framework includes standardized trade rules, a formal governance structure, and a clear adjudication and dispute resolution process.
Beginning Jan. 1, the code — which has been phased in over time — will be fully operational, including its complaint and enforcement mechanisms. Grocers, suppliers, and other participating members will be able to file formal complaints, and the office will begin collecting annual membership dues.
Starting in 2026, the Office of the Canada Grocery Code will also publish an annual report outlining industry trends, systemic challenges, and recommended improvements, according to the Canada Grocery Code website.
