The City of Calgary says water consumption remains unsustainably high, even as crews finish replacing a damaged section of the Bearspaw South feeder main and prepare to bring it back online in the coming days.
City officials reported Friday that water use on Thursday reached 508 million litres, an increase of one million litres from the previous day. It marked the fifth consecutive day consumption has stayed in the critical zone, forcing the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant to operate continuously to meet demand.
Officials say reducing daily water use by just 30 litres per person would bring overall consumption down to 485 million litres — a level that would allow the Glenmore plant to pause operations and give underground reservoirs time to recover.
Until that target is reached, residents are being urged to continue conserving water. The city is asking people to flush toilets only when necessary, run dishwashers and washing machines with full loads, and shorten showers as much as possible.
Despite progress on infrastructure repairs, officials stress that conservation efforts remain essential to stabilize Calgary’s water system.
