Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva says he spoke Thursday with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and that Carney accepted an invitation to visit Brazil in April — a move aimed at strengthening bilateral ties.

In a social media post summarizing the call, Lula said the two leaders condemned the United States’ use of force in Venezuela and called for reform of global governance institutions.

According to a readout from the Prime Minister’s Office, Carney and Lula discussed the situation in Venezuela and affirmed support for a “peaceful, negotiated, and Venezuelan-led transition process” that respects the democratic will of the Venezuelan people. They also emphasized the need for all parties to uphold international law and sovereignty.

The official readout did not explicitly mention the U.S. military operation that captured Venezuela’s former leader, Nicolás Maduro, but both sides have stressed the importance of international law and regional stability.

Carney’s upcoming visit is expected to further discussions on economic cooperation and diplomatic coordination between Canada and Brazil.
