Calgary’s water system is gradually coming back online nearly two weeks after a major break in the Bearspaw South feeder main, but city officials say residents must continue to conserve as the system remains fragile.

After water consumption dipped briefly over the weekend, usage climbed again on Sunday. City data shows Calgarians used 509 million litres of water, up from 493 million litres on Saturday.

The city’s target remains 485 million litres per day or less to maintain essential services and allow underground reservoirs to refill.

Crews are still in the process of slowly filling the repaired section of the pipe, a cautious approach designed to give engineers time to monitor for leaks or other issues. Officials say rushing the process could risk further damage.

Once the pipe is fully filled, the city will work with Alberta Health Services to test the water and ensure it is safe for use.

“Water restrictions will only be eased once the system has been confirmed safe and fully stabilized,” city officials said in a news release Sunday.

The City of Calgary is expected to provide another update on the situation Monday afternoon.
