A large polar air mass settled over central Canada has triggered widespread yellow and orange cold warnings across the country, affecting every province and territory except British Columbia, the Yukon, and Nunavut.
Bitterly cold conditions are expected to continue through Friday, with wind chill values ranging from -40 to -50 in several regions. Gradual improvement is forecast over the weekend as milder air begins to move in.
In Alberta, yellow cold warnings have been expanded along the entire eastern border, including communities such as Medicine Hat and Lloydminster. Calgary is bracing for a daytime high of -12 C on Friday, with early-morning wind chills dipping to around -27.
Light, scattered flurries are possible across central Alberta on Friday afternoon and evening, with some snow potentially reaching Calgary. More persistent snowfall is expected on Saturday, particularly along the foothills. Calgary is forecast to receive between one and three centimetres of snow.
Looking ahead, a Pacific ridge of high pressure will begin pushing over the Rockies by the end of the weekend, helping to moderate temperatures. By early next week, Calgary is expected to see daytime highs above seasonal norms, with temperatures climbing above freezing for much of the week.
