British Columbia Premier David Eby is sharply criticizing reported meetings between members of Alberta’s separatist movement and U.S. officials, calling the actions deeply inappropriate and amounting to treason.

Speaking to reporters in Ottawa on Thursday ahead of the first ministers’ meeting, Eby referenced a report by The Financial Times that claimed representatives of the Alberta Prosperity Project met several times with officials from the U.S. State Department in Washington. According to the report, the meetings have taken place since April.

Eby said while discussions around Canada’s future, including calls for referendums, are part of a healthy democratic process, seeking assistance from a foreign government crosses a serious line.

“There’s a difference between debating issues within Canada and asking another country to help dismantle the country,” Eby said. “There’s an old word for that — treason.”

A U.S. State Department official, speaking on background, confirmed that department representatives regularly meet with members of civil society but stressed that no commitments or agreements were made during the meetings.

Eby added that the situation is particularly concerning given past comments and actions by U.S. President Donald Trump, whom he said has shown little respect for Canadian sovereignty.
