Senior Canadian and Indian officials have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation on national security, law enforcement, and cybersecurity following high-level meetings held in Canada earlier this month.

Between Feb. 6 and 7, Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree and Canada’s National Security and Intelligence Advisor to the Prime Minister, Nathalie G. Drouin, met with India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval during his official visit. The discussions focused on enhancing collaboration to improve the safety and security of both countries and their citizens.

Officials from both sides acknowledged progress already made and agreed to a shared workplan to guide future cooperation on national security and law enforcement priorities. A key outcome of the meetings was a commitment by both countries to establish security and law-enforcement liaison officers, a move aimed at improving direct communication and timely information sharing between agencies.

The enhanced cooperation is expected to support joint efforts to address issues of mutual concern, including the illegal flow of drugs—particularly fentanyl precursors—and the activities of transnational organized crime networks.

The parties also agreed to formalize collaboration on cybersecurity policy and information sharing, while continuing discussions on cooperation related to fraud and immigration enforcement. Officials emphasized that all collaboration will be conducted in line with domestic laws and international obligations.

Both governments described the talks as an important step toward deepening practical security cooperation.
