Most Albertans would choose to remain part of Canada if a referendum on provincial separation were held today, according to a new survey from the Angus Reid Institute, released amid renewed debate over Alberta sovereignty.

The poll found that 65 per cent of Albertans say they would vote to stay in Canada, with most of those respondents indicating their decision is firm. In contrast, 29 per cent said they would support separation, although the majority of that group described themselves as leaning toward the idea rather than being fully committed.

The survey is the first in a three-part series by the Angus Reid Institute examining separatist sentiment in Alberta and Quebec, and the factors shaping views on the country’s future.

Despite clear majority opposition to separation, the findings suggest some uncertainty remains among Albertans. Four in five respondents said their opinions are mostly made up, indicating that while many have settled views, a portion of the population remains open to persuasion.

Researchers say the results highlight both the resilience of national unity in Alberta and the underlying tensions that continue to fuel sovereignty discussions.
