Air Canada has announced it is suspending service to Cuba, citing an ongoing shortage of aviation fuel at airports across the island. The move comes as concerns grow over fuel supply disruptions, following threats by U.S. President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on countries that continue to provide oil to Cuba.
In a statement shared with Global News, the airline said it will operate a series of empty southbound flights over the next few days to retrieve passengers currently in Cuba. Air Canada estimates about 3,000 customers will be flown home as part of the repatriation effort.
The airline said the decision was made after governments issued Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) warning of unreliable fuel availability at Cuban airports. According to those advisories, aviation fuel is expected to be commercially unavailable at the island’s airports as of Feb. 10.
For any remaining scheduled operations, Air Canada said it will carry additional fuel on board and, if required, make technical stops during return flights to refuel outside Cuba.
The airline did not specify when regular service to Cuba might resume, saying the suspension will remain in place until fuel supply conditions stabilize and safe, reliable operations can be ensured.
