The federal government is moving to reduce range anxiety and encourage more Canadians to switch to electric vehicles by significantly expanding the country’s EV charging infrastructure.

On Tuesday, the ministers of environment, energy and transport are expected to announce $84.4 million in funding for more than 8,000 new electric vehicle chargers across Canada. The investment aims to improve access to reliable charging, particularly along major corridors and in communities where infrastructure remains limited.

In addition to charger expansion, Ottawa will direct $5.7 million to three projects under the Green Freight program. The initiative supports efforts to cut emissions from the trucking sector through measures such as adopting low-carbon fuels and cleaner technologies.

The government is also expected to announce $7.2 million for 30 education and awareness projects focused on electric vehicles, designed to inform consumers about EV benefits, costs and charging options.

Federal officials say the combined investments are intended to accelerate EV adoption, lower transportation emissions and support Canada’s broader climate and clean-energy goals.
