A wave of grief is sweeping across Canada and beyond after a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., left 10 people dead, including the suspected gunman.
RCMP say the violence began Tuesday when two people were killed at a home in the northeastern B.C. community before the suspect went to Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Several more victims were found in and around the school. Police confirmed the lone suspect died by suicide at the scene.
Investigators say they are still working to determine a motive and are “not in a place” to explain what led to one of the deadliest mass shootings in Canadian history.
Condolences have poured in from leaders around the world. Prime Minister Mark Carney ordered flags on federal buildings and the Peace Tower lowered to half-mast for seven days, saying Canada is grieving alongside the tight-knit community.
King Charles, French President Emmanuel Macron, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also expressed sympathy for the victims and their families.
“In such a closely connected town, every child’s name will be known and every family will be a neighbour,” the King said in a statement.
Counselling supports are being mobilized as the community begins to mourn.
