Canada’s Eliot Grondin added another Olympic medal to his collection on Thursday, capturing silver in the men’s snowboard cross at Milano Cortina 2026. Grondin finished just behind Austria’s Alessandro Haemmerle in a nail-biting race, separated by only 0.03 seconds.
The duo previously finished 1-2 in a photo finish at the 2022 Winter Olympics, making this rivalry a repeat of their past Olympic showdown, though with a slightly wider gap this time.
Grondin, 24, took the lead late in the race but could not hold off Haemmerle at the final stretch. This marks Grondin’s third career Olympic medal; he also won bronze in the 2022 team event alongside Meryeta O’Dine.
Earlier in the day, Canada’s Mikael Kingsbury narrowly missed gold in men’s moguls, taking silver on a tiebreaker after finishing with the same overall score as Australia’s Cooper Woods.
Grondin is the reigning two-time World Cup season champion and captured gold at last year’s World Championships, while Haemmerle took bronze. With this silver, Canada now has six medals at the Milano Cortina Games: three silver and three bronze, keeping the country on track for a strong showing in the Winter Olympics.
