Prime Minister Mark Carney will travel to Tumbler Ridge, B.C., in the coming days following Tuesday’s mass shooting that left nine people dead in the small northern community.
In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, officials said details of the visit — including the timing — are still being finalized in coordination with local leaders and “based on their immediate needs.”
The tragedy has shaken the town of approximately 2,700 residents. Police say the 18-year-old shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, killed eight people before taking her own life.
Among the victims were five students from Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a teacher. The shooter’s mother and stepbrother were also found dead in the home they shared with Van Rootselaar.
B.C. Premier David Eby and federal Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree are currently in Tumbler Ridge, meeting with community members and local officials as residents grapple with the devastating loss.
The shooting has prompted an outpouring of grief across the province and country, with flags lowered and supports being mobilized for students, families and first responders.
Federal officials say the prime minister’s visit will focus on offering condolences, supporting the community and assessing what additional federal resources may be required in the aftermath of the tragedy.
