Canadian immigration authorities are investigating nearly 300 foreign nationals flagged by British Columbia’s anti-extortion unit, according to new figures provided to Global News.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) confirmed it has opened investigations into 296 individuals identified by partner agencies involved in the B.C. Extortion Task Force as persons of interest.
The updated numbers, current as of Feb. 4, mark a significant rise from just over 100 investigations reported a month earlier.
CBSA immigration enforcement officers are examining the cases for possible “inadmissibility,” which could lead to removal from Canada if immigration violations are found.
So far, 32 individuals have received removal orders, the agency said, with 10 already deported. In addition, nine people are awaiting hearings before the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada, where deportation orders could be issued.
