Canadian airlines are restarting flights to and from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, after suspending service over the weekend due to a surge in violence. Air Canada, Air Transat, WestJet, and Porter Airlines have all confirmed the resumption of service, with WestJet also operating routes to Guadalajara and Manzanillo.
The travel disruption came after authorities in several Mexican regions instructed residents and tourists to shelter in place following violent outbreaks on Sunday. The unrest followed the death of a high-profile cartel leader during a government operation.
More than 26,000 Canadians in Mexico have registered with the federal government, according to Ottawa. Global Affairs Canada continues to advise travelers to exercise a high degree of caution while in the country.
Although no new security incidents have been reported as of Monday, officials warn that further disturbances may occur in the coming days.
