“We are one family,” said Prime Minister Mark Carney, standing alongside Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, as the two leaders announced a major step to reset Canada–India relations. Carney extended an official invitation for Modi to visit Canada, which Modi accepted, though no timeline for the visit has been set.

The announcement came amid a backdrop of heightened scrutiny over foreign interference concerns. Earlier in the trip, Canadian government officials suggested India was no longer actively involved in foreign interference or transnational regression. Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand later clarified her stance.

“The words of the senior official are not words that I personally would use. I agree with his comments relating to the guardrails that we have in place,” Anand said, pushing back on the earlier remarks.

The comments have prompted serious pushback from Canada’s Sikh community, the country’s intelligence community, and some Liberal MPs, including Secretary of State (Combatting Crime) Ruby Sahota, highlighting the delicate balancing act Ottawa faces in strengthening bilateral ties while addressing national security concerns.
