The Alberta government is set to inject billions into the province’s acute care system as part of Budget 2026, aiming to ease pressures on hospitals and improve patient care.

Hospital and Surgical Health Services Minister Matt Jones, Finance Minister Nate Horner, and Acute Care Alberta interim CEO David Diamond unveiled the funding details at the Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary on Tuesday morning.

“Budget 2026 takes decisive action to relieve pressures on Alberta’s health-care system, providing health professionals with the resources and infrastructure needed to deliver timely, high-quality care for all Albertans,” Jones said in a news release.

The funding comes from the ministry’s three-year capital budget of $1.4 billion and includes:

  • $315 million to improve access in rural and remote hospitals
  • $63 million over two years to develop vacant spaces, increase capacity, and improve patient flow
  • $330 million over three years to support faster, safer surgeries

Officials say the investments will strengthen Alberta’s health system and help ensure patients receive timely care across the province.
