Energy Minister Tim Hodgson says Canada is already receiving inquiries from countries looking to secure energy supplies as conflict in Iran drives up global oil and gas prices.

“The world right now is feeling incredibly insecure as a result of this weekend,” Hodgson said in an interview with CBC News. “So we’ve already seen an uptick in inquiries about how quickly Canada can expand its clean and conventional energy exports.”

While Hodgson did not identify which countries have reached out, he cautioned that increasing production is not an overnight process.

“You don’t change the amount of production of LNG or oil in days,” he said, noting that expanding output and export capacity takes time and significant planning.

The minister made the remarks on the sidelines of a major mining conference in Toronto, described as one of the largest such gatherings in the world. He said the escalating conflict in the Middle East — and the resulting threat of supply disruptions — highlights the importance of developing Canada’s natural resources to help stabilize global markets.

Hodgson added that strengthening both conventional and clean energy production would position Canada as a reliable supplier during periods of geopolitical uncertainty.
