Prime Minister Mark Carney offered rare insight into his working relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump during a stop in Australia on Wednesday, acknowledging that managing ties with his American counterpart is not always straightforward.
Speaking at a think-tank question-and-answer session in Sydney as part of his Indo-Pacific tour, Carney said he has learned to choose his words carefully when engaging with Trump publicly to avoid unintended fallout.
“It’s not easy,” Carney told the audience, suggesting that diplomacy with the U.S. president requires a measured and deliberate approach.
At the same time, the prime minister noted that Trump can differ in private discussions compared to his public persona. Carney said face-to-face meetings allow for a more open exchange of ideas, with greater room for candid dialogue than is often visible in public statements or social media posts.
Asked how he has navigated the relationship so far, Carney summed up his approach in three words: “Respect but not obsequiousness.”
The comments come as Canada works to balance its economic and security interests with the United States while expanding partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region. Carney’s remarks suggest an effort to maintain a firm but pragmatic tone in one of Canada’s most consequential international relationships.
